Science and Commerce are the main streams available to school students of 11th and 12th standard in India. Udgam School for Children, which is Ahmedabad city's premier CBSE board English medium school, has decided to widen the subject options for Commerce students. It will introduce 'Entrepreneurship' as a subject in 2012-13 for Class XI and in 2013-14 for Class XII.
The subject aims at providing the basic concepts of entrepreneurship, equipping students with entrepreneurial values, attitudes, motivation and competencies so that they can pursue a career that calls for creativity and innovation. So far, business acumen was learnt only at college level, but now it is a part of higher secondary curriculum.
The present students of Udgam Schoolshowed a keen interest in Entrepreneurship as a taught subject when they attended a day-long workshop. This prompted the school to seriously consider including this subject as one of the options for the Commerce stream.
The fact that Udgam School is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat's largest city, helps all the more in propagating trade sense amongst school students and directing them down the path of business and self-employment as a career. It is said that entrepreneurship runs the in blood of Gujaratis. Every practicing professional, be it a lawyer, chartered accountant, doctor or architect is an entrepreneur and hence such a course helps students in building an independent business, regardless of their chosen vocation.
This subject exposes students to the practical aspect of "commerce" and hence their learning increases in related subjects like economics, accounting, and organizational management.
Entrepreneurship is arguably more beneficial compared to Maths or Computer, which are the present optional subjects for students of 11th and 12th (CBSE). Students who eventually plan to pursue their graduate studies for MBA, CA or LLB can gain from this subject as ultimately they are building their career in entrepreneurship.
Udgam School is looking for students who are serious in building their careers, and who believe that a strong foundation in 11th and 12th class is necessary for a successful professional life. So, it encourages such students to apply for the Commerce stream and choose Entrepreneurship as a subject.
