A new director is to be appointed for the Council of Management of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research(TIFR).The decision of the appointment of Sandip Trivedi as the director has been discarded by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).Being a faculty at the institution Trivedi had been nominated as the director by a search committee in January.
Mustansir Barma, the previous director's tenure was over. And hence Trivedi had been nominated as the director by a search committee in January.
However the institute has been directed to publish advertisements in the newspapers for inviting new candidates
The search committee earlier selected was managed by the renowned scientist CNR Rao and other two members.
A new search panel is to be appointed for starting the process all over.
The PMO wants the appointments across national science institutes to be homogeneous. According to a professor this is a step for streamlining the process.
As the decisions lacked transparency this method will be better.
Another professor told that the appointment was finished in few months.
The professors in the institute have varied opinions on the PMO's intervention in the internal affairs.
Some condemned the interference where other s feels that it brings clarity to the appointment process.
