The newly found ratio of faculty-student at the IITs appears
better than the ratio of previous years, mainly due to the limited sized
batches. According to the study, the most common faculty-student ratio is 1:10,
but the present ratio is considered to be better, which is 1:8 for IIT Mandi
and is supposed to be the best one across the IITs with a roll of 810 IITians
having 104 faculty members. The ratio
for IIT Ropar is 1:9, IIT Gandhinagar is
1:10 and IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad each have a ratio of 1:12.
The older IITs have to reduce the ratio which is presently
1:14 for IIT Bombay, with IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur having 1:16 and 1:19
respectively. The shortage of faculties for the older IITs is about 30-40%,
which mainly affects the pupil-teacher ratios (PTR). But the newer IITs have
better PTRs because of well-planned faculty allocation, infrastructure and
having no work pressure on increasing intake, as stated by Rohin Kapoor, director
at Deloitte.
New IITs are looking for high quality faculty as per the increasing demand. SK
Das, director of IIT Ropar, stated that the faculty strength has been increased
by more than half to 90 in past one and a half year. IIT Ropar plans to admit
1,200 students and launch 2 departments in next summer. This planned strategy
will help in selecting the candidates based in and outside India, with
recruitment mainly focused outside India. Mr Das reported that this year too,
faculty recruitment will be done by visiting many more countries to hunt
talent.
A similar plan is also prepared by IIT Mandi to recruit
faculties from across the globe. The director and the faculty will visit and
interact with scholars even using video-conferencing, which was informed by Bharat
Singh Rajpurohit, Dean (faculty). The new IITs at Indore and Gandhinagar are
proactive and already looking out to recruit world-class researchers and
faculties. Along with the recruitment, funding research, exchange programmes
and corporate secondments are also part of faculty engagement activities. The appointed
professors will be provided amenities such as well-equipped residential campus,
childcare centres and campus school. Visiting researchers from the best
universities of the world are always visiting IITs in India.
