"If you look at scientific evidence, yoga improves motor skills and also makes hand-eye coordination better," said the Union HRD Minister at the first "National Yoga Olympiad organized by the NCERT which saw the participation of over 300 students belonging to 21 states from the country. Even differently-abled kids performed various "asanas".
The Olympiad saw the participation of students from all communities and regions, unified by one main purpose, to perform the yog asanas.
Smriti Irani called upon teachers and parents to take advantage of the ancient practice and inculcate this as a healthy habit within their children. She also hopes that in the upcoming years the Yoga Olympiad would attract more participants from all the states, all over the country. The minister also declared that six central universities would start full-fledged yoga departments and offer various courses under the same subject this year onwards.
AYUSH minister Shripad Naik, who was also actively present in the event, said that an "International Yoga Olympiad" should also be organized along the lines of the national event organized this year.
