Recently, Delhi AAP government informed the Delhi High Court that school girls will become capable in defending themselves in case they encounter danger as they will be given self-defense training soon.
Program on self-defense for girls
According to the reports, a bench of Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Yogesh Khanna feels that by learning self-defense techniques they will be able to defend themselves and the training will also serve as the preventive measure.
After the horrific incident of Dec 2016 gangrape the High Court has made the safety of women its primary objective and has taken various steps to ensure their safety. The bench also recommended that program be made a part of the curriculum.
Requirement of more trainers
Chairperson of the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal, said "there were only 50 trainers from the Delhi Police to train the students. She said the government should ensure that adequate number of trainers are provided to hold the classes."
The bench has also asked the Delhi government to provide additional trainers and volunteers.
Initially, the self defense initiative is only being taken in the government schools and in future may be extended to private schools as well.
