On the basis of the Ranks achieved in the Joint Entrance Exam (Advanced) the IIT conducts the joint counselling for IIT and ISM (Indian School of Mines). The Indian School of Mines will be converted to IIT from the next academic year. Hundreds of seats stay vacant even though the institution has a system of spot admissions.
Also there is a gradual decline in the number of students getting admission through the Joint counselling. The numbers fell from 931 in 2012 to 815 in 2013 and 750 in 2014.
Once the counselling process gets over the ISM conducts spot admissions by advertising in the local newspapers to bring it to public notice the number of vacant seats. The students who have cleared the JEE (Advanced) but have been unable to secure admission in any IIT are invited. The ISM has been unable to fill its seats as even after 121 students were admitted through spot system 23 seats were still left vacant. In 2013 also eight seats could not be filled.
The ISM spot admissions are for B.tech and M.Tech or dual (B.Tech & M.Tech) degree courses. There are no admissions in B.Sc and M.Sc courses.
It is commonly found that the maximum numbers of seats are taken by the students from the SC, ST or OBC category. However in ISM spot admissions, most of the seats are taken by the General category.
The following table illustrates the seats taken by the different categories in 2012, 2013 and 2014
