The Gujarat state Government is contemplating on taking the ordinance route to come up with two new Universities in the state. Proposed to be set up at Junagarh and Godhra, these varsities will bring in changes in the geographical areas of Sardar Patel University and Gujarat University.
This change will be applicable by mid of May.
Sources tell that the Government is thinking of bringing four ordinances to make the changes. The districts of Anand, Kheda and Panchmahal would be excluded from the affiliation of Gujarat University.
The sources quoted, "At present, Vallabh Vidyanagar-based SPU can affiliate institutions in its 8-km periphery. By the ordinance, the government will amend the SPU Act and expand its jurisdiction to whole of Kheda and Anand districts. In the process, 22 institutes under GU will come under SPU,''
The Junagarh University will have exclusive jurisdiction over Porbandar, Junagarh, Gir-Somnath and Amreli, whereas the Godhra based University would have its jurisdiction over Dahod, Chotta Udepur, Panchmahal and Mahisagar districts.
The sources further added, "This decision will have huge impact on the underdeveloped area. Students will not need to travel long distances after these two new universities are set up. The government aims to start these two universities from the coming academic year so it has opted for the ordinance route. The bills will be passed in the winter session for all these four ordinances, Allocation of land and financial resources is under way."
