In order to promote the Khadi and other handloom industries of the nation and to mark the occasion of National handloom day an inter-university debate and cultural programs were organized by the Jamia Millia Islamia University together with Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The topic of debate for the occasion was "This House Believes that it is time for a second Swadeshi movement in India to promote handloom industry". It was organized by the 'BOL' - debating society of the Jamia Cultural Committee.
50 students from the Univerity debated on the topic and presented their views in English, Hindi and Urdu.
Prof Wahajuddin Alvi, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Languages who was the Chief Guest on the occasion said, "JMI has been associated with Khadi and Swadeshi movement since its inception against the British system of education. He said that even after Independence, JMI was the only university where students and teachers both used to wear hand- woven clothes and topi".
Nationally renowned artisan, Mr. Khemraj said that the Britishers who were once the enemy of Indian handloom are now its biggest consumers.
Dr. Rajesh Bali from Directorate of Field and Broadcasting said that while Indian handloom is picking a great pace in the west there is still, a need to promote it among the Indian masses which will help in giving the industry even more boost.
A cultural program was also organized to tell the students about the importance of the handloom products.
