A few months earlier, after crossing so many hurdles, IIMs received the autonomy of awarding the degrees to the candidates of management courses but, there is one last hurdle for the IIMs to cross and that is to decide a formal name for their degree.
IIM-A and IIM-L favor the name 'MIM (Master in Management)' while the other IIMs are rooting for the more general nomenclature MBA, which stands for Master of Business Administration.
The debate on the name of the degree came up during the meeting of the 20 IIM directors which was called last month. The meeting was called to make a final call on the issue whether the institutes should grant postgraduate diploma in management (PGDM) or a degree to the batch which is graduating this month.
“Yes, this question (of what should the IIM degree be called) came up at the meeting. But this will require more discussion and debate. To protect the brand equity of the IIMs, all 20 institutes will have to agree on one nomenclature, whether that's MBA or MIM,” said one of the institute directors, who attended the meeting in the Capital, but did not wish to be identified.
Another director, explaining the difference between the MIM and MBA said: "Students enrolled in a MIM program usually do not have full-fledged or years of experience as opposed to MBA students who have a few years of professional experience under their belt."
MIM is a very common nomenclature with the well-known schools such as London Business School, HEC Paris, ESCP Europe, Duke Fuqua and Bucconi.
However, under the UGC list MBA and Masters in Management Studies or MMS are the only two recognized names for the two-year management programs which are being offered by the management institutions in the nation.
