There are a total of 10,766 government schools in the Himachal Pradesh.
Astonishingly 411 schools have less than 5 students and there are just six to ten students in 745 schools.
More than 943 government primary schools in Himachal Pradesh have a single teacher compared to 21 schools where the teacher pupil ratio is 1:1.In 1,136 schools where there are less than 10 students there are about one to four teachers.
Informing the assembly chief minister Virbhadra Singh raised his concern over this imbalance.
About 35 schools in the state have a single student. There are two teachers for one student in 14 schools.
The situation in Shimla, Mandi, and Sirmaur and Kangra districts is appalling as the schools are being run with one teacher each in the 180, 180, 163,141 and 107 primary schools respectively.
Responding to the members Ravinder Singh Ravi, Satpal Singh Satti, Vijay Agnihotri, I D Dhiman and Vikram Singh of BJP, the chief minister said 943 schools have only one teacher each.
The Solan, Una and Hamirpur regions have 33, 32 and 24 schools respectively with one teacher each. In Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti tribal areas there are 13 and 45 schools respectively with a single teacher.
The overall situation is despairing as in 71 schools there are only two students, in 65 schools only three students, in 100 schools only four students and in 140 schools only five students.
