Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) has been planning to rename its Central Library and campus road. Several committees have finalized the plan of renaming. The committee plans to rename its central library after Dr. B.R Ambedkar.
The final decision was made by the statutory decision-making body, last week. The committee has also planned to rename campus roads with the names of India's idealistic leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia and Jawahar Lal Nehru. "It has been decided to rename the various roads inside the sprawling campus after certain visionaries such as Ram Manohar Lohia and Jawaharlal Nehru," an EC member said. "The council has given its approval for renaming them, but the names are yet to be decided. A panel may be constituted to take a call on the list of visionaries after which the roads will be renamed," he added.
This decision of renaming the Central Library was in accordance with the demands from RSS's student wing ABVP. The ABVP, which is in an ideological battle with the Left-backed groups on campus, had demanded a statue of the architect of Indian Constitution be installed on the campus. This step has been taken so that students across the nation easily identify the university and its roads easily on the map. A separate panel has been appointed to decide the names as it's only the principle of renaming is adopted instead of the names itself.
