According to the recommendations given by the IITs to
improvise, the merit–cum-scholarship scheme should be amended in such a way
that every eligible candidate should be benefitted. IIT, which is the country’s
premier institute, has suggested a fee exemption policy for candidates from the
weaker sections of society. It has advised the government to offer no interest
loans to students, which will help the institutes in managing the financial
matters better.
According to government rules, the fees of the students from
weaker sections will get reimbursed directly. The fraternity of IIT requested the
government that the cost of students of special category, financially affects
the institutes. It suggested the government to reimburse the additional expenses
alone and are supporting the government in the social welfare decision, as stated
by Indranil Manna, director at IIT-Kanpur.
IITs have requested the HRD ministry to reimburse the cost
incurred on the students of the weaker section of society through DBT, if the
government decides to offer free education for such students. The proposal was
unanimously resolved in the 155th meeting of IITs’ directors held at IIT-Kanpur
and chaired by the Union HRD minister. Nearly 48.5% of students in IIT
undergraduate level get scholarship and do not pay the fees. Government should
directly address the issue and bear the cost, which was stated by Indranil
Manna.
The institute also stated that the recent hike announced by
the government in the fees will affect the concessions offered to the students.
SC/ST and physically challenged students from economically weaker backgrounds
are currently excused from the tuition fees and also offered financial
assistance.
IITs requested to offer interest free loans to the students
of the economically weaker section. And to reduce the duration to only four
years. The merit-cum-scholarship scheme should be
improved so that every eligible student should get the benefit.
