On Monday, a three member committee was set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) in order to examine the working of the deemed universities. The committee will also suggest the oversight along with the regulatory mechanism for the deemed universities.
The panel will be headed by the former Chief Justice of Patna High Court L Narasimhan Reddy. On November 3, SC scrapped the engineering courses which were offered in distance education mode by four deemed universities-- RN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Institute of Advanced Studies in Education in Rajasthan, Allahabad Agricultural Institute and Vinayaka Mission Research Foundation, Tamil Nadu.
Scrapping the courses, SC said that UGC filed to regulate the deemed universities and asked the government to form a panel comprising “eminent members who have held high positions in the field of education, investigation, administration or law at national level” within a month and examine and address the issues related to the distance education.
Two other members of the committee are AICTE chairman Anil Sahasrabuddhe and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, additional secretary at HRD Ministry.
As of now, the panel has been asked to submit its suggestions in four months and court has ordered the government to take the actions based on the findings of the reports.
