The deadline for approving new colleges in Maharashtra by the state government has been extended as the state government has diluted the norms mandated by the Maharashtra Public Universities Act.
'An ordinance to change the statutory dates for calling for applications from prospective new colleges is to be tabled soon in the cabinet,' said sources.
This means that now more colleges can apply for approval for the academic year 2018-19. Earlier, the last date to receive the application for the new colleges was September 30 and the government has to take final decision on approval by November 30 but now, the proposal to extend the final dates is pending a cabinet approval.
State Education Minister Vinod Tawde refused to comment on the issue and said "the Maharashtra State Commission for Higher Education and Development (MAHED) was yet to look at the findings of the expert committee."
To review the perspective plans submitted by the universities of the state, the state government earlier, had formed a committee which has submitted its findings to the MAHED.
In order to accommodate more colleges, the deadline was extended last year too from June 25 to July 31 and finally to August 5.
Last year, 13 new colleges were approved by the Maharashtra government by using the government discretionary powers though the colleges were not eligible for the approval, as reported by the IE.
Of the approved colleges (using the government discretionary powers), three of the colleges belonged to BJP state president Raosaheb Danveʼs trust, Chhatrapati Shivaji Smarak Samiti.
