Under the Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya programme, eleven model
schools will start functioning in Ganjam district from the next academic
session.
The District Education Officer (Ganjam) Sanatan Panda said
that they are targeting 15 model schools. 11 schools are ready to start as
their construction is over while construction of other four is still going on.
He said that the government has decided to construct one
model school in each of the 22 blocks in the district.
As per the officials, government would build 17 schools and
Tata Steel would take the responsibility of the rest five.
It is believed that out of total 17 schools, 11 have been
completed and four are under construction. While the construction of the other
two schools (in Chhatrapur and Ganjam blocks) has been delayed due to problems
in selection of land.
Considering the pathetic plight of government schools in
India, this move to establish model schools by Odisha government is highly
laudable and gives us a hope of some resurrection for government schools. It is
an irony that children going to government schools are not at par with their
private school peers in terms of receiving quality education and this just goes
on to highlight the inequity that persists in the field of education. A similar
initiative of establishing model schools has been taken up by the government of
Delhi too.
