Recently, HRD ministry gave approval to Homi Bhabha National
Institute (HBNI) which is situated in Mumbai to start an off-campus centre at
Bhubaneswar in the name of National Institute of Science Education and Research
(NISER) with prospective effect.
On Wednesday, a statement was released by the ministry
stating that it has issued a notification in this regard on the advice of the
University Grants Commission (UGC).
As per the statement, for the first six years, UGC would be
reviewing the off-campus centre biennially for the conduct of academic course
or programmes. Thereafter, every five years it would be subject to usual terms
and conditions as prescribed under the UGC regulations.
The proposal to set up an off-campus centre at Bhubaneswar
in the name of NISER was submitted by HBNI in 2010 to the ministry.
Then, UGC evaluated
the proposal with the help of an expert's committee in terms of the provisions
of UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2010 and its
amendments.
