Students from leading technology institutes across the state have been selected for Summer Research Fellowship Programme- 2012 sponsored by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences. Of the 1,315 students selected for this programme in the Nation starting from June, 85 students are from Bengal. They belong to Indian Statistical Institute, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, Presidency University, St. Xavier's College, Heritage Institute of Technology-Kolkata (HITK), Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, University College of Science, Technology & Agriculture, Bidhannagar College, West Bengal University of Technology and Ashutosh College among others. Sayantan Ghosh, one of the selected candidates from Heritage Institute of Technology, said: "This opportunity is the stepping stone towards the world of research and it would give a boost to my career." He said he would be conducting research on "the effects of hpylori on gastric cancer". The highest number of students has been selected from the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research. Four students also have been selected from the Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata. Then there are others from other institutions. The students have been selected to conduct research in 7 categories of science and technology which are earth and planetary sciences, physics, mathematics, life sciences, engineering, chemistry and agricultural science. This fellowship programme is organized to encourage research among students. In the two-month programme, the research students would get a stipend of approximately Rs. 7,000 and additional allowances for traveling and other purposes. The students would be conducting research on their chosen topic under the guidance of the experts selected by them while submitting their application forms. After completing their research, the students would submit their reports and presentation.
