The Secret In Education Lies In Respecting The Student
Well said Mr. Ralph Waldo Emerson-
"The Secret In Education Lies In Respecting The Student" .
I came across the quote while going through some pages and then suddenly realized what important meaning it held behind these few simple words. The relation between a teacher and a student is even more productive when the respect is there, not only from student to teacher but also the other way round. One of the most prevalent issues highlighted is that of a teacher continuously disrespecting a student or group of students. All educators expect their students to be respectful to them; they should in turn be respectful as well. This isn't always easy, but a teacher must always handle interactions with students in a positive manner. A teacher is never there to embarrass a student. It is best to address them separately from the class. They should talk to them, not down to them.
If we search online about such unprofessional conduct, we'll find too many mishapenning taking place in schools & colleges which is disturbing to the profession.
Sometimes we forget to think about the fact that few students come from such background wherein they are already suffering from such problems on daily basis. They feel a kind of trust & security at school, with administration & other staff members. This kind of misconduct can create a mental pressure to them. It is important to realize that every kid is different. There are tremendous differences in each & every individual student and with each individual class.
Always try & think about your words when dealing with a student. It shouldn't be harsh, violent & disrespecting.
A relation between student and a teacher is respected for centuries and forever because a teacher is sharing his part of knowledge to a kid, where a child respects the teacher for doing, so a teacher also sometimes feels privileged to be teaching a certain student who he thinks and knows had made efforts. If this is how all the teachers see all their students then it can really give the children a sense of being appreciated. Respecting the fact that all the kids are trying their hardest to be a teacher's favorite. Kids will always make mistakes. It would be stupid to think that they won't. There is a difference between having high expectations and having unrealistic expectations. Such bias & exploitative behavior will destroy a relationship with a student. Everyone deserves a second chance, & if you give it a chance, you'll find better results out of that.
There are certain misconducts which can lead an educator on a path towards disaster or losing respect from students. Avoid following practices:
"¢ Never be bias- Be Fair. Treat every student the same when dealing with the same situation.
"¢ Never ignore a student- Pay equal attention to every student.
"¢ Never be rude or yell at student- If you act harsh with students, they will lose comfort from next time.
"¢ Always smile- Smile produces a positive energy, always carry it & be polite to students.
"¢ Avoid creating unrealistic expectations- Do not create unrealistic expectations which a student cannot achieve.
"¢ Avoid negative attitude- Always carry Positive Attitude. An educator who has a positive attitude about their students and their job will be more effective.
"¢ Do not measure anyone's personal interest- Never treat students based on personal interest.
"¢ Never misuse your authority- If you have given a responsibility, never ever take undue advantage of that.
"¢ Accept your mistakes- Making mistakes is in human nature. So always apologize when you make a mistake.
"¢ Avoid overfriendly behavior- Try to be supportive but not over friendly with students when in class.
"¢ Do not humiliate- Never disrespect or deal with a student with a revenge attitude.
"¢ Never be sarcastic- Never hurt anyone's feeling by commenting such statements which means opposite to what you are speaking to him.
"¢ Do not gossip "“ It's a complimenting educator nature, not to comment or complain about other teachers in front of your students.
"¢ Do not threaten students- if you act as a devil, not a good educator, you'll lose respect & student would stop coming to your class.
"¢ Have a Sense of Humor - Having a sense of humor can be disarming. Students will naturally look forward to come to your class and learning if they know that you aren't uptight and rigid.
These are several things that a teacher can do to earn their student's respect. This will lead you on a path toward mutual respect and it will maximize a teacher's overall effectiveness. A teacher becomes so much more effective when they can earn a classes respect. Educators should always try to build positive & trusting relationships with students. Remember, respecting them back is always the key.
