It must be known to almost every literate Indian that besides the regional state boards of education, the most prevalent boards of education in India are ICSE and CBSE. These boards are the primary nationalized education boards of India. Though a few numbers of other national and international boards of education have made their entry into the education scenario in India, still the aforesaid boards dominate the field undoubtedly. The other boards lose out in the long run owing to the sheer magnitude of impact and numbers.
A brief introduction of the two boards
CBSE is a government owned body which is regulated and controlled by the Union government of India. Its abbreviation stands for Central Board of Education in India. On the other hand, ICSE which stands for Indian Certificate for Secondary Education is an exam which is conducted by the CISCE board. The abbreviation CISCE stands for Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations which is in fact a privately owned non-governmental self governing body. The CISCE board conducts two sets of exams namely ICSE and ISC for classes 10 and 12 respectively. Interestingly, though the name ICSE belongs to the said exam, people still prefer to call the board ICSE instead of CISCE. Hence in the pure sense of terminology, the name ICSE is a misnomer when talking about the board.
Comparison between the boards
The two boards do differ in terms of the syllabus pattern followed and the ways of implementing the same. Moreover, compulsory requirement of passing the class 10 board examinations is a must in ICSE whereas it doesn’t exist in CBSE lowing to the abolishment of pass and fail criterion till class 10. CBSE is arguably a board which follows a more scientific approach towards education. It puts more focus on science while somewhat neglects the other fields like arts and commerce. On the other hand, ICSE is said to follow a more balanced attitude towards the curriculum. Equal focus is given on science as well as other subjects.
Which board scores higher in terms of efficacy?
People who would like their students to get an all-round development in all fields; ICSE is undoubtedly the best place to go. The format and equal impetus to all subjects especially the higher standards of literature make the board score higher. On the other hand, students aiming for science as a career objective can happily choose CBSE due its science oriented curriculum. Such a curriculum helps them in the long run in higher classes. Moreover, most entrance exams are based on CBSE curriculum which according to many is beneficial for the students. This fact is often considered as a plus point for joining the CBSE board.
The final verdict
Though people squabble much over the issue of which education board to opt for still, many facts are more myths than they are real in nature. Quality education is provided by the curriculum of both the boards. They strive for the best ways for the development of the child in their own unique ways. Hence it hardly matters which board one chooses for but, what matters is most how the education is preached by the institution as well as how the preached education is utilized afterwards.
