Literacy of any country determines the economic as well as intellectual development of the country. The formula is simple; the more literate people of a country are the more it will grow. Especially in the cases of developing countries like India education is a major factor which has resulted in the sudden rise in the middle classes. Where to study is a question which every literate person asks himself at one point or another.
What is literacy?
Many people equate being literate with having the ability to speak English fluently. That is not at all the case. In India, a literate person is one who has the ability to read and write any language. With the advent of globalization, however, English has become the most sought for language in all states of India. Especially in the education sectors it has almost become a necessity.
However, with the laws of this country this is not to be termed as literacy. It is simply having the ability to read and write. When an individual has this ability, he/she can become empowered in today’s society much more easily than before.
Benefits of rising literacy levels
There are many benefits when literacy. It directly has an impact on the economic development of the country. Education is the key to civilization. When people are educated they learn the ability to question and find different and more productive ways to earn wages. In today’s world, education has become the only means to raise one’s class.
And many people are jumping on this opportunity. When people are educated they will find better ways in society to earn their living and will be better equipped to teach their children. The best example for this is Kerala, around the 1960s corresponding to the literacy rates the child and female mortality raised. These developments have a direct impact on society as a whole.
Problems are still there
However, as far as education India goes, there are still many fights that need to be won. Especially, in the cases of women’s education the situation is still dire. There are still many orthodox families which deny their girls' education. This is a major issue that needs to be resolved.
Almost half the women in India are still completely dependent on their husbands because of their lack of literacy. As they are not educated they do not have the means necessary to fight for their rights which they are unaware about. Although many NGOs are now going to these remote areas and explaining people about the importance of a well rounded education and its benefits to society.
The level of awareness needs to increase
While the social welfare departments are doing everything to educate the people however, the pace in India is still slow. In this fast paced world along with literacy now computer literacy is also slowly becoming important. The internet is the best way to help people in the rural parts of India to see the rate of development all over the world. This will inspire them to educate their kids in a better way. India now has to think one step ahead of literacy. It should help society gain computer literacy so that people can now become literate sitting in any part of the country. Better women’s education also results in a rise in the average percentage in Examination results.
