Education is seemingly a pathway to attain knowledge and rightful learning in order to evolve as better human beings who are aware and responsible about their social and moral duties. This very pathway has now moulded into a different thing altogether that harps more on academic success for a brighter career rather than evolve as better individuals. The basic necessity of education and its credibility is apparently lost somewhere in the middle during the transition period that evolved education into its current form.
The Indian education system
The Indian education system has now turned into a career nurturing prospect whose sole aim is to generate graduates at the production end who get good careers owing to the education they had in their academic lives. The system is more intent on producing zombies who are self-centred and academically cloned individuals who hardly differ on grounds of original thinking and applicable innovativeness. The system apparently harps more on rote learning rather than proper knowledge and development of skills. The typical ideology has resulted in the formation of a modern generation who are more suited for monotonous clerical jobs rather than those based on development and innovation.
The root of the cause
The basic erroneous act that is hurting the entire nation’s education system badly is the religious pursuance of the senile British education system which is currently been shunned by the British themselves. The system banks on the method of rote learning in order to generate students who grow up into a workforce who can efficiently perform monotonous duties rather than think on subjects that require knowledge and applied innovations. The growth of knowledge, nurturing of ideas, watering the talent and cultivating thoughts is hardly seen anywhere in the education scenario which further increases the graveness of the situation.
Exams and only exams
The British education system stressed the most on one important aspect for excellence i.e. examinations. The exams are the single most important barrier to overcome for attaining academic excellence. The mindset is thus that if an individual can score good marks in an examination even by mugging up his lessons, he deserves a place in the best university or institution. On the other hand, anyone who is an all-rounder or perpetual achiever in studies with inquisitiveness for research, he will never get considered for anything unless he has got the required marks in the examination. In this system, before talent and knowledge comes the ability for rote learning which the key to success in most cases is.
The effectiveness of the system
The system needs to get over its obsession with exams. The lagging state of India in today’s global research scenario is witness enough to the side effects that are taking place due to our short-sightedness. The perseverance with knowledge will pay off if the current system is tweaked for good purpose. The exams must be replaced with assessment schedules that will cover the overall talent rather than some centralized ability. The rote learning system will never take India to prosperity standards which it wants to achieve for global dominance. The time is ripe to take up the cause and work for the cause to make tomorrow a different day altogether for education in India.
