Jadavpur University is one of the most highly rated Universities across the globe. It is very well known for its excellent standard of education and research work over the years. They are known to have produced the best students across the country. Off late the University has been in news for all the wrong reasons. There have been a lot of bad things going on that has been degrading the quality of education.
The Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University Prof. Souvik Bhattacharya handed over his resignation to the state governor stating that he did not want to continue with his post. He said that the step he was taking was based completely o personal decision. He had some personal reasons why he had to leave. However it was not too long before people recognized the actual reason.
He had made earlier comments that the problems regarding the political issues and elections in the college was getting worse. The previous left front government had made things bad but with the change in power to TMC the situation just got worse. He said that the situation as not good enough to have any kind of academics going on in the university.
He had made up his mind about his resignation and that is the reason he did not feel the necessity of informing the state education minister before dropping in his resignation at the governor's office. Over a period of time he was trying to reduce the influence of the political bodies on the decisions of the University. He thought that the academic decisions should only be taken by the teaching staff and the qualified members of the university and not by the pressure from political influences.
This has been the story in various parts of the state. Vice Chancellor Amrita Chatterjee quit her post in 2011. She said that she was not interested in extending her tenure as the VC of Presidency University. Exactly a month before that VC Subrata Pal declined his post as the VC f Burdwan University. He said that the political situation was not fit for any kind of academic progress in the state.
Prof. Nanda Dulal Paria VC of Vidyasagar University also resigned from his post because there were too much interference from the council bodies and the non teaching political organizations. He wanted the academic decisions to be kept away from these people and when they started interfering he dropped from his post as VC.
Gour Banga University of Malda saw two quick resignations from their VCs as there were conflicts from the political powers. The teachers were beaten and this created panic. Both the VC's said that they had health problems to continue with their post.
However people realized that these were cover stories. Achintya Biswas did not get his resignation granted at the first time but second time he did. There are inside stories that hint that the VC had left because he was not able to make political harmony with the ruling party.
