The Muslim minorities of West Bengal had something really to cheer about in the holy season of Ramadan prior to their celebrated festival of Eid. The Muslim youth could not have anything more to expect as a gift from the state government when the chief minister Mamata Banerjee herself announced a dream come true package for their future.
Banerjee announced the news while attending the state’s largest Eid prayer on Red Road where she said about their right for reservation of seats for the Muslim community students as they belong to a minority class in West Bengal. The special quota of reservation for Muslims is something she had in store since many days according to sources.
She announced that the government wants the youth and upcoming generations hailing from the minority communities to excel in higher education and work for the state’s as well as the nation’s development. Specifically she said that she wanted to see minority community students becoming doctors, engineers and quality professionals in the future.
She announced that the reservation of seats would be implemented from the 2014-15 academic session while asserting her dominance in championing in the upliftment of the minorities in the state. According to her the amount of work Banerjee and her government has done to boost the status of the minorities in the state, has surpassed the efforts put by the previous governments.
She also credited herself for being the sole sympathizer of the Muslim community as she took pride in exhibiting her achievements for the community. People in west Bengal have witnessed how Mamata Banerjee has been trying hard to lure the Muslims and secure their vote banks by offering them luring developmental procedures and provide scope for progress of the community.
“We have made budget allocations of almost 73% only for scholarships meant for the students of the minority communities. We are proud to have implemented whatever the Sachar Committee had suggested for the development of the Muslim community in the state,” Banerjee said while revealing the details of the initiative.
Banerjee said that Muslims will also get more opportunities for the development of business and other social aspects for further alleviation of their demure state that they had been lying in for years. “A massive restoration project of all Muslim burial grounds is also on the cards which will soon be implemented”, she further added.
According to her Bengal feels pride as being a place where Muslims feel secure and are at brotherly terms with their Hindu counterparts. The government too sees them as equal citizens and they are never subjected to biased treatment or suffer from segregation. She also said that Bengal is a place where communal clashes are unheard of and peaceful harmonious existence of citizens occurs under her governance.
Qazi Fazlur Rahman, the leader of the Eid congregation however said that the government was just offering them a lollipop in disguise. He added that the government has hardly done anything for the Muslims in reality. He harped on the fact that the government has implemented a miniscule of the promises that she had earlier made to the Muslim community while coming to power in the state.
