The standard of medical education of the country has not been good over the past few years. The standard needs to be increased as quickly as possible. The post degree education in the country is not up to the mark. There are not enough seats for the students to study after graduation. This was a severe problem. The Indian students spend too much time studying theory. The practical knowledge is lacking among Indian students.
The medical council of India has decided to increase the number of seats for medical education. This will increase the number of doctors in the country. According to the MCI the colleges that have more than 50 seats can apply for up to 100 seats and the colleges with more than 100 seats can apply for seats up to 150. This was done in a desperate attempt to increase the number of doctors in the country.
At the moment there is a movement going on called “Save the doctor”? The movement has asked for the increase in medical seats. The Cochin medical college has agreed to apply to increase the number of seats in their college. According to the law passed by the Supreme Court they can now apply to increase their seats.
It has been speculated that earlier the college had a chance to increase the number of seats in their college. That time the college authorities did not pay attention to this. Now they are taking the matter seriously. The college has to fulfill certain conditions before they can apply for increase in seats in their college. There are certain terms and conditions laid down by the Supreme Court of the country.
Previously the college was not recognized as a government college. Reforms are going on in the college so as to meet the norms laid by the law. There have been demands to declare the CMC as a government undertaking concern. The college is working hard to fulfill the conditions that the government has said them to meet.
The institution has about 100 seats at the moment. Out of these 100 seats 50 per cent seats are filled according to merit. The remaining 35 seats are filled by self paid candidates and 15 seats are reserved for NRI candidates. Once the capacity is increased the college will be able to accommodate more people to offer them specialization courses in the medical field.
The entire process is being though about swiftly. The authorities do not want to delay the work anymore. They are willing to do this as soon as possible. The authorities have declared that they will apply before 30th September which is the last date of application.
The medical education of the country needs to be more practical and the students need to be given more practical knowledge and case studies in order to increase their knowledge. Only theory study will not help in making good doctors across the country. The transformation is necessary.
