Introduction
The University of Toronto was established as King’s College. It was initially operated by the Church of England and was the first institution for higher education in Upper Canada. It became autonomous in the year 1850, when it also adopted its current name.
The University Ranking by Academic Performance ranked the University of Toronto 2nd in the world in research performance whereas The Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2015 placed the University of Toronto at 19th place globally and 1st in Canada. On the other hand, the QS World University Rankings of 2015 placed the university at 34th in the world and 2nd in Canada.

Campus
Spread across an area of 180 acres, the University is situated around 2 kms from the Financial District in Downtown Toronto and south to the neighborhoods of Yorkville and The Annex.
University of Toronto has three campuses, home to more than 84,000 enrolled students from more than 160 countries. It also consists of around 13,000 faculty members, 6,000 staff, and over 800+ student clubs. It also owns the 3rd largest library system in North America.

- The University of Toronto Libraries is the third-largest academic library system in North America.
- The university was the place for the following scientific achievements:
- was the birthplace of insulin and stem cell research
- was the site of the first practical electron microscope
- the development of multi-touch technology,
- the identification of Cygnus X-1 as a black hole
- The theory of NP-completeness.
- The University of Toronto is noted for influential movements and curricula in literary criticism and communication theory, known collectively as the Toronto School.
- It is one of two members of the Association of American Universities located outside the United States, the other being McGill University.
