It looks like that the recent placements held at IIT Madras
was dominated by the presence of consulting companies and the core engineering
sector and 28% of students were placed in each. This was the first phase which
took place from January 6 to 16th and second will be held during weekends for
the next few months. It was observed that there was an increase in job offers
by R&D and PSU sectors this year when compared to last year and about 14%
of students were placed in each of these sectors. After this, educational
sector is going to pick up as many educational institutions are expected to
visit during the second phase.
Last year, during the first phase, 737 students were placed
while this year the number dipped to 717. Due to increase in R&D and PSU
sectors coming to the IIT-M campus, there was an increase noticed in the
placement of students under the Dual Degree and M. Tech programmes. The placements
went up to 81 and 57% in these fields.
Placements under different engineering branches witnessed
success as each had a 60% placement record. Like last year, students were
placed in high numbers from Computer Science and Engineering as well as
Electrical Engineering.
According to placement coordinators, the first phase was
delayed due to heavy floods in Chennai, however it wasn't affected as most of
the companies that registered managed to visit the campus.
