Union HRD
minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday said that “the centre is committed
towards improving the quality of education in the country and assured greater
autonomy for top performing educational institutes”.
Speaking to a
news channel the minister said that “education for us is not a political agenda
but a national agenda and after demonetarization government has now more money
to spend on education”.
He added that “the
government is ready to provide more autonomy to the private and deemed
universities but to enjoy that they have to be among the top ranked institutes
in India”.
“The higher the
ranking the greater the autonomy. Top ranking institutions can enjoy as much as
90% of autonomy and 10% regulations. The average universities will have 50:50
autonomy and regulations and the bad ones will have 90% regulations and 10%
autonomy”.
When asked why the
Indian students leave for overseas studies the minister attributed the same to
the lack of infrastructure for research and lack of scholarships in India.
He added that “the
government is focusing on how to stop the flow of students to foreign
institutes”.
“India needs to
change its perception regarding the higher education and we are building 20
world class universities” said the minister.
