Students facilities
Accomodation
The University has approximately 385 properties properties available for staff and students. 700 new homes will be located on the University’s North West Cambridge Development – a new district of Cambridge. Homes are available to rent to eligible members of the University.
There are 320 properties from private landlords currently listed with the Accommodation Service. You can use this site to search for the right property for you, but you must arrange viewings and tenancies directly with the landlord.
Libraries
You certainly won’t be short of libraries at Cambridge – the collegiate University has more than 100! They fall into three broad categories.
- College libraries – all Colleges have a library which contains the standard texts needed for your undergraduate course, along with other materials relating to your subject.
- Department libraries– the libraries in the faculties and departments offer more specialised collections of books, journals, periodicals and electronic resources for particular subjects.
- University Library – if you can’t find what you need in your College or department library, you can try the University Library (or UL). As one of the country’s six legal deposit libraries, the UL is entitled to a copy of every book published in the UK and Ireland and holds an enormous collection of materials printed overseas. Here you have access to more than eight million books, journals and other documents, written in more than 2,000 languages and ranging in age from 3,000 year-old manuscripts to the latest electronic articles.
College fees
All overseas fee status students, and those UK/EU students who aren't eligible for tuition fee support (eg because they're taking a second undergraduate degree), normally have to pay College fees in addition to University tuition fees.
The College fee covers the cost to your College of providing a range of educational, domestic and pastoral services and support. College fees vary between Colleges (currently between £5,670 and £7,980 per year). See individual College websites for details and you should allow for increases in subsequent years.
Living expenses
Your living expenses may be higher than for a UK student, for instance if you stay in Cambridge or the UK during the vacations. The minimum resources needed in Cambridge per year (excluding tuition and College fees) are estimated to be approximately £9,570, depending on your lifestyle.
