A Brief Introduction
Founded in1996, the della Svizzera italiana comprises of four faculties.
It is regarded to be a highly international University, with with a student population of 3,000, 65% of which made up of international students from more than 100 different countries. Its courses are taught in both English and Italian, and range from Bachelor's level to PhD degree programs.
The University is a dynamic one that has decided to carve new ways of enhancing its attractiveness and of raising its profile on both the Swiss and international level.
Campus
Spread across an area of 15 acres, the University has 2 campuses: one in Lugano, for the Faculties of Economics, Communication Sciences, and Informatics, and the other in Mendrisio (15 km South, closer to the Italian border), for the Academy of Architecture.The number of students, availability of excellent resources and the beauty of the campus make it a safe, friendly and familiar environments, where students, teachers and researchers can engage in stimulating dialogue, take part in extra-curricular activities, and enjoy university life to its fullest.
Student Facilities
The campus has developed around ancient neoclassic buildings, skillfully adapted to host lessons, laboratories and ateliers. New buildings and infrastructures have recently been added to provide students, faculty and researchers with more highly functional spaces and top quality equipment.Classrooms and study rooms, ateliers, computer labs accessible day and night, and libraries equipped with the most modern systems offer ideal conditions both for individual study and for teaching activities.
Accommodation
This is a service provided by the University to help students in their search for a place to stay. The Office cannot guarantee full success at all times, but provides free one-to-one advice and information on what is available.The Accommodation Service can assist you in several ways:
- It runs a database with regularly updated vacancy adverts
- It ensures a timely update (changes, deletions) of all information recorded in the database
- It provides language assistance whenever applicants encounter difficulties in their contacts with letting agents or landlords
- It provides basic information on tenancy laws and general guidelines on housing, procedures, etc.
A Facebook group has been set up to enable students to contact others in order to form groups to share houses or flats or for those in existing tenancies where a flat mate has moved out to recruit an additional person.SEMP (ex Erasmus) or mobility students seeking accommodation for the duration of their study semester in Lugano are invited to contact the Service by e-mail, for one-to-one advice: alloggi@usi.ch.
Cost of Living
Living in Lugano or Mendrisio entails for students a monthly expense of approximately CHF 1,500 - 2,300.In average, the monthly student's budget is approximately as follows:
CHF 450-800 Shared single room or one-bedroom apartment
CHF 450 Food and other household expenses
CHF 60-150 Public transport
CHF 250 Books and study materials
CHF 150 Recreation and travel
CHF 160-280 Health Insurance, if required
Tuition Fees
Programs | Fees |
Bachelor’s | Tuition fees for the Bachelor’s degrees amount to CHF 4,000 per semester. Applicants whose official residence was in Switzerland (including Liechtenstein and Campione d'Italia) at the time of the final high school exam (Maturità) pay a reduced semester fee of CHF 2,000. Tuition fees are payable at the beginning of each term, by the deadline indicated on the invoice; fee payment is an essential condition for matriculating or renewing one’s enrolment.
