Accommodation
It is very difficult to find accommodation in the city of Munich, especially during the months of September, October and November. It is advisable for students to begin their search for the same considerable amount of time before the semester begins.
The majority of students in Munich live in flats, share apartments or private rooms. A minority of 13% students only live in the student housing, which is managed by Studentenwerk München”.
The average rent per month in Munich is around 400 Euros. Rooms and sharing flats may cost between 400 and 650 Euros a month. The rooms in student housing however, cost between 290 and 350 Euros a month.
Note- Be aware of fraudulence! Never transfer deposits or rental payments before arriving Munich, nor should you ever send you ID copies by mail to anyone till you are sure of the location and person.
Fees and Cost of Living
From the year 2013-14, there is no academic tuition fee required to be paid by students. Instead students have to pay semester wise , and charges for domestic and international students are the same.
Basic Fee: 52 EUR (Grundbeitrag, formerly Studentenwerksbeitrag)
Student Transit Pass: 61 EUR (Semester ticket, mandatory basic fee for restricted use, can be upgraded to full use "IsarCard Semester", costs are for winter term 2015/16)
You have to pay the registration fee (basic fee + student transit pass) within a week of registering (by cash or bank transfer).Munich is one of the most widely known, attractive and vibrant cities of Germany. Unfortunately it is also one of the most expensive as far as costs of living are concerned.
Typical costs are :
- Rooms in private housing including utilities: €350–€600
- Rooms in university housing: €300, or €370 including utilities
- Health insurance: €80
- Meals: €200–€250
- Mobile phone: €15–€30
Thus, we suggest you calculate your monthly expenses no less than 700 EUR per month for costs of living. LMU, however, suggests students to calculate with 800 - 1,000 EUR per month.
Funding and Scholarships
International students are eligible for a limited number of scholarships and funding opportunities throughout the State of Bavaria and Germany. Some of these scholarships include:
- Third-Year Scholarship
- Deutschlandstipendium
- Study Credit BAFÖG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz)
- Doctoral Student Funding
