Eligibility
To apply for an Australian Student Visa, you must:
1.Have good character and be certified healthy.
2.Have an acceptable Overseas Student Health Cover insurance.
3.No debts to Australia.
4.You must have enrolled and admission in a registered course unless you are an AusAID/ Defence student.
5.You must satisfy attendance and course progress as required by your institution.
6.Financial capacity to support your study and stay in Australia.
If you wish to work while studying, you must follow these rules:
1.You cannot work for more than 20 hours a week.
2.No work limits are applied during recognised vacations given by your institution.
Further Substantive Visa Eligibility and Conditions
This is any type of visa which is not a bridging or criminal justice or enforcement visa.
Applicants of Subclasses 570, 572, 573, 574, 576 and Assessment Level 3 and 4 are not entitled to a further substantive visa other than
1.A student with permission to work
2.A further Student Guardian Visa

Student Visa Subclasses
Australia's student visa program includes six student visa subclasses and a student guardian visa. Each student subclass is based on the education sector of your principal course of study. The Student Guardian visa is intended for guardians who wish to accompany a student under 18 years of age.

1. Independent ELICOS sector student visa: Subclass 570
With this visa you can study and live in Australia till you are enrolled in a course registered in the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students

Some ELICOS visa have a ‘no further stay’ condition which means you have to leave the country beyond the date on your visa.
Conditions of Work

2.School Student Visa; subclass 571
This is for students wishing to study in a primary , secondary or approved secondary school exchange program

This is the visa for students applying to study Certificate I, II, III , IV ; A diploma ; An advanced diploma ; a vocational graduate certificate or vocational graduate diploma.

This is for those students looking to apply for a Bachelor degree, Associate degree, Graduate certificate, Graduate diploma and Masters by coursework.

This is for students applying for a Master’s degree by research or Doctoral degree.

6.Non-award Visa , Subclass 575
This visa is for students who want to do a course with a non-award foundation course OR any other full-time course which does not lead to an Australian award.

7.AusAID or Defence sponsored student visa ; subclass 576
This visa is for students who are sponsored by AusAID or Defence for a course of any type on Australia.

8.Student Guardian, subclass 580
A legal custodian or a relative of the Visa holder may accompany the visa holder as a guardian if they are under 18 years of age.

Meet health and financial requirements
Except in exceptional circumstances, the student guardian must be related to the applicant in one of the following ways:
•Spouse;
•Child;
•Adopted child;
•Parent;
•Brother or sister;
•Step-child;
•Step-parent;
•Step-brother or step-sister;
•Grandparent;
•Grandchild;
•Aunt or uncle;
•Niece or nephew;
•Step-grandparent;
•Step-grandchild;
•Step-aunt or step-uncle; or
•Step-niece or step-nephew.
Student guardians must meet the basic criteria of health, character, health insurance, debts to the Commonwealth of Australia, custody arrangements, and accommodation and general welfare.
They must also meet all financial requirements for students. This means they will need to show they have enough money to pay for living expenses, education costs and travel for the duration of the course. They will also need to show that they have enough money for themselves, their spouse and all of their children aged less than 18 years, whether or not they will be coming to Australia with them.
In addition:
• Student guardians will not be able to bring their family members to Australia as dependants;
• A person who has any dependent children under 6 years of age will not be able to act as student guardian; and
• If you intend to be the student guardian of more than one student while in Australia, you must notify the department (when you apply) which student you would like your visa linked to.
Student Visa Processing Times
Even for a straightforward application, an Australian student visa can take up to 3 months to process. This time may be extended by the presence of a criminal offence on the application or the need for a medical. Student visa Assessment Levels are determined by the passport you hold and the visa subclass you are applying for.
