The University Grants Commission (UGC) has said ‘NO’ to the distance education programs in Hotel Management and Real Estate and has prohibited them from running. "In accordance with communication received from various regulatory bodies, programs in Hotel Management, Culinary Studies and valuation of Real Estate, will not be recognized from academic session 2019-20 and onwards," a recent official order said.
The order also stated that admissions taken in the recognized Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programs during the recognition period will be recognized until the completion of the program even if the university does not have the recognition to run such courses in the future. The condition is that the ODL program must have been offered in accordance with UGC norms and territorial jurisdictions.
The UGC had notified the Open and Distance Learning Regulations in 2017 according to which colleges and universities cannot offer distance learning programs in medicine, engineering, and architecture fields. Later, distance learning programs in agriculture were prohibited too.
"Since in India the rainy season continues till August-September every year and admission in conventional programs end in August, the schedule for admission in ODL programs will henceforth be as follows--for academic session beginning in January last date would be February end and for the session beginning in July the admission process would end in September," the UGC order said.
