On Thursday, Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) informed the Parliament that no final decision has been taken regarding the merger of higher and professional educational bodies in the country. The information was told by HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' as he was responding to the questions asked by Rajya Sabha members A Vijayakumar and Dr. T Subbarami Reddy.
Last year, in Septemeber the official from the HRD Ministry has told the news agency 'Press Trust of India' that a bill has been proposed for the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) which will replace University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
The ministry had also announced its decision to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC) by repealing the UGC Act, 1951 and a draft regarding the same was also put in the public domain.
"The Higher Education Commission of India will be a single regulator and replace UGC and AICTE. The bill has been prepared after elaborate consultation with states. It will be taken to the Cabinet in October," a senior HRD Ministry official said then.
