The Ministry of Minority Affairs has increased the scholarship amount for the girls belonging to the minority communities by 15 percent. The name of the scholarship is ‘Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship Schemeʼ and is maintained by the Maulana Azad Education Foundation (MAEF), a subordinate organization of the ministry.
The foundation has also decided to start aggressive campaigning about the scholarship to increase awareness about the scheme.
During 2017-18, more than 115,000 girls are given the scholarship under the program. For the scholarship INR 78 crores were allocated by the government.
“This year, we are planning to have a budget of Rs 90 crore. We have also informed the ministry about it,” said MAEF Secretary Rizwanur Rahman.
“There is still a need to increase awareness about this scheme. We are trying to start aggressive campaign to spread awareness,” he said.
Under the scheme, the girl students of class 9 and 10 are given INR 5000 each per year and students of Class 11 and 12 Rs 6,000 each per year.
