Amid the celebrations of Indian athletes' jaw-dropping performance at Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the University of Delhi has decided to shut down its physical education course.
About the course:
- Understanding the relevance of sports, the university introduced physical education as a part of curriculum in 2011, however was kept on hold until last year
- The university teaches the subject as an elective course for third-year BA programme students
- The course is divided among two semesters
- It was only last year that the new curriculum of the course was introduced under the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP)

How students and teachers feel about the action
- Of course, students who have already been enrolled in the course are feeling petrified from the fact that the university is going to end the course. As many as 24 students have been enrolled in the course, currently.
- "We hope that the principal agrees and lets us study. Seniors have told me it is a good course with several career option," said a student, keeping anonymity
- Teachers are more puzzled to hear the sudden ultimatum by the university. A teacher from the university, Mamta Sahrawat, alleged that the principal had planned about it after consulting the governing body.
