On August 15, 2016, the Human Resources Development Ministry is all set to launch Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform 'Swayam' which is a massive successful space mission by the students of College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) in collaboration with ISRO.
Swayam is a 1-U pico satellite developed by the undergraduate students of College of Engineering, Pune. They have successfully completed assembly of the flight model having a size of 1-U and weight of 990 grams under the guidance of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in January 2015. The structural design of the satellite, design of its electronic and control systems as well as the manufacturing of the satellite was carried out by the students. The project was completed over a span of 8 years and more than 200 students worked on it. The Satellite was launched by ISRO on June 22, 2016 along with Cartosat-2C by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C-34 from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Center, Sriharikota, India. The satellite is to be placed in low earth orbit (LEO) around the Earth at a height of 515 km.
As per the sources, this initiative is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on India's Independence Day, August 15, 2016. "The preparations for the project are on in full swing. The project has the capacity to revolutionize the education system. It is expected to be launched by the Prime Minister on August 15. When completed, it would bring in interactive Content on MOOCs format of more than 2.5 lakh hours which would make it the world's biggest repository of interactive electronic learning resource under a single window. This would allow any student in the country to take the courses offered by the best teachers on SWAYAM, especially bridging the academic deficit experienced in the backward areas and helping raise standards of education," officials said.
This innovative technology is Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and will provide educational material for classes 9-12 to Under Graduate and Post Graduate students covering all disciplines. The material is being by a panel which consists of highly qualified teachers across the nation. Another advantage for this is that, Microsoft is the technology partner for this venture.
