The 100ft tall national flag was hoisted in Delhi’s Hans Raj college on January 25, by Naveen Jindal, the Member of Parliament and President of Flagship Foundation, India. According to the Flag Foundation of India, DU is the first public university to hoist “monumental” flagpole in the country.
The whole country witnessed this incredible moment 11 months after the vice chancellors of all central universities resolved to install the flag proudly on their campus.
The decision to install the national flag on their campuses was taken in a meeting chaired by the then HRD minister Smriti Irani on February 18 last year. It was adopted with an aim of instilling nationalism and pride in the students.
The decision came after the controversies of shouting anti-India slogans were raised at an event in the university. As per the CEO of the Flag Foundation of India, the flagpole installed in DU is very much similar to the one installed in Connaught Place’s Central Park. This is definitely an incredible moment for the whole nation and a proud moment for the university.
