Aspirants who have cleared the JEE advanced 2017 exam can
now log on to special portal launched by IITs in order to help women get
through the admission process. The web portal was launched this week and the
main aim of the portal is to improve the gender ratio at the IITs. According to
current stats females make only 8 percent of the total population at the IITs
and the portal was launched with the aim of achieving the target of increasing
the ration of women in IITs by 20 percent by 2020.
It was observed by the JEE council that last year only 38
percent of the female candidates accepted the seat out of total number of
females who cleared the entrance exam. The gap was mainly due to the counseling
process and council also found out that the ration was skewed as parents are
often worried for their daughters when it comes to sending them at colleges far
from home.
In order to bridge the gap, the portal http://students.iitmandi.ac.in/other_IITs.php—
was launched by the IITs not only this but also, helpdesk has been set up by
the IITs which is being operated by more than 100 women faculty, students and
alumni.
It will help the candidates to get in touch with
the women faculty and students at all the IITs which will help them in
selecting the ideal IIT for them. Timothy A Gonsalves, director of IIT Mandi,
has also witten a letter to all the female candidates who have successfully
cleared the JEE advanced and congratulated them and informed them about the portal.
In a similar move to help the female candidates, IIT Delhi will also host an
Open house for the women candidates.
