As students of JNU were protesting and demanding to meet the UGC chairman, minor clashes took place between police and students from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
In order to prevent the protesting students from storming the UGC office, police placed barricades and warning signs and when police tried to force the students to retreat from the barricade, clashes occurred and in the heat of the event some students got roughed up by the police.
"We just want to meet the (UGC) Chairman. Police are not even letting us convey this message to him inside. We mean to protest peacefully," former JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar.
The students were protesting against the university's decision to reduce the number of seats in M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses. The decision came in after UGC put the cap on the number of students a faculty member can take under its supervision as a result of which 1000 plus seats have been reduced to 102.
Earlier in the day students also protested on the Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, which resulted in the long trail of jammed automobiles."We were forced to protest on the road since the police weren't allowing us to do so outside the UGC then," a JNU student told IANS.
