Recently, rankings of a US agency - US News Education World,
were out and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) ranked 10th in the country in the
list of overall 'Best Global Universities'. BHU is at 123rd position among
Asian Universities while its global ranking is 625th. Harvard University in the
US ranks first globally, while Japan's University of Tokyo is on the top in
Asian countries.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is at the top
among the top-10 academic institutions in India followed by Panjab University,
Chandigarh (2nd), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (3rd), Indian Institute
of Technology Delhi (4th), Indian Institute of Technology Madras (5th), Aligarh
Muslim University (6th), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (7th), Indian
Institute of Technology Kharagpur (8th), University of Delhi (9th), Banaras
Hindu University (10th), Jadavpur University, Kolkata (11th), Indian Institute
of Technology Roorkee (12th), University of Hyderabad (13th), and All India
Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (14th).
The criteria used to test/calculate BHU's overall 'Best
Global Universities' rank include- global research reputation (12.5%), regional
research reputation (12.5%), publications (10%), books (2.5%), conferences
(2.5%), normalized citation impact (10%), total citations (7.5%), number of
publications that are among the 10 percent most cited (12.5%), percentage of
total publications that are among the 10 percent most cited (10%),
international collaboration (10%), number of Ph.D.s awarded (5%), number of
Ph.D.s awarded per academic staff member (5%).
Last year, BHU was on top among the three Indian
universities which managed to enter the QS World University Rankings by Subject
2015 "“ Chemistry. As per the head, Prof V B Singh, the 'QS World University
Rankings by Subject 2015', published recently highlighted the world's top
universities in 36 individual subjects, based on academic reputation, employer
reputation and research impact. In the list, BHU was on top followed by Delhi
University and University of Hyderabad.
Rajesh Singh, a BHU spokesperson, it is spread in an area of
1300 acres has a student strength of over 29000 with 134 departments and five
institutes. Another campus at Barkachha, in Mirzapur district is the largest
residential university in India with an area of 2700 acres.
