On Wednesday, Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) announced that aaadhar cards are mandatory for students who will take up the examination of Class X and XII board.
Though the Supreme Court in October 2015 allowed linking of Aadhaar cards for availing government schemes only to be on voluntary basis and no person shall be deprived of any benefit for want of Aadhaar. But this announcement has made it mandatory for the students. But this order is limited only to regular students thus, exempting private and open board candidates from this diktat.
GSHSEB examination secretary R I Patel directed for these new rules as students bearing the Aadhaar card number will be permitted to appear for the examination. He said, "It is compulsory for students (regular) of secondary and higher secondary schools registered at Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board to have an Aadhaar card number from the current academic session. This would also be implied to students submitting examination forms in September, this year. As 80 per cent of students already have Aadhaar card it would be only the remaining 20 who would get it made. This will help in scholarship applications of students."
