In an attempt to lift the backward classes in Punjab, which suffered extreme suppression and were the victims of the BJP misrule during the past 10 years, Punjab government on Wednesday doubled the quota for the backward classes in educational institutes and raised it to the 10 percent from 5 percent.
In addition to this, the quota for the backward classes was also increased by the government in technical and professional institutions in Punjab.
According to the reports, the reform came into effect immediately as the notification regarding the same was issued by the Welfare department. Further, this quota will not impact the quota for Schedule casts and Schedule Tribes, which is currently 25 percent.
In the election manifesto, the Congress government had promised several measures in order to uplift the OBCs and Dalits, which also included the increase in quota in educational institutions and jobs.
SC, ST reservation
In 1964, the Punjab government had announced 20 percent reservation ad 2 percent seats for the members of the SC and ST community in education, technical and professional institutions. Eventually, these norms were revised by the government which then enhanced their quota by 5 percent which then made the reservation for the SC 25 percent and 5 percent in case of other backward classes.
