Dharma Life is a social enterprise dedicated to poverty alleviation through rural entrepreneurship. The social enterprise was founded in 2009 by a group of graduates from the London Business School. After identifying the need for creating skilled and sustainable livelihood in rural India, the team began exploring business models that are capable of addressing this issue. The team created an end-to-end value chain that enables individuals at the base of the pyramid to earn a sustainable livelihood; a model that would engage the local community and offer the highest likelihood of success. This resulted in an innovative approach of value creation that combines rural entrepreneur development and multi-product distribution.
Rural entrepreneurs are identified, selected and trained to become social change makers in their village by addressing the issues of awareness, accessibility and affordability for social impact products such as solar lights, clean cooking solutions, water purifiers amongst others. Today, Dharma Life acts as a holistic service provider, right from generation of insights to developing consumer focused interventions through their existing channel of field staff and entrepreneurs. This has resulted in greater income generation for entrepreneurs, improved consumer awareness, and increased adoption of social impact products.
Dharma Life is a partner of choice for leading corporates such as Unilever, Prestige, Usha, Philips, Panasonic, Microsoft (Nokia) and Singer, and is strategically supported by organizations such as Shell Foundation, Tata Trusts, GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), DFID (Department for International Development, UK), elea Foundation and DOEN Foundation (a foundation set up by the Dutch Postcode lottery).
