Just when the Indian government had decided that they would give the foreign universities to open up their branches in India, the universities have turned away. 6 of the best colleges have refused to open their own campus in India. They are still going to continue with their research with the collaboration with other institutions in India but they will not open their branches in India.
The government has definitely taken the right step towards making the education system in India better. However the universities are not interested. India does not have a single institution in the top 400 institutions in the world. In the top 500 institutions India has managed to find only one institution that is the IIS Bangalore. Looking at this dreadful situation the government decided to allow the foreign universities to open their branches in India.
The foreign universities said that even if the policies in India are of good intention to provide good education, it will not change their pattern of work. They always prefer to work on a partnership basis in collaboration with other institutions in India. They do not want to settle in India and create branches. That would mean that giving independent branches to India which is against their way of working.
The Indian government opened up policies for the foreign universities to open their branches in India and provide foreign education. This would definitely prevent the Indian students from going to study abroad. The foreign universities have to be dedicated to the society and they are to be nonprofit making organizations. This was widely welcome by the other existing universities in India. They are welcomed by the industry leaders.
The best 6 institutions have made it clear that even though they do not want to open their branches they will still carry on with their research with the Indian students. They strictly believe that they cannot create the same amount of expertise in any other part of the world. The quality of education that they provide in the main campus cannot be replicated. There is lack of the faculty that they have in their institutions.
It is true because you cannot expect to have the same faculty at Oxford University as well as in India. Some of the tier two colleges from across the world have shown interest in the new educational policies of India. They are eager to open their branches and bring their methods of education in this country. This will be a great learning experience for the Indian students.
However these institutions will be entitled to have their own entrance examinations and board examinations. The setting up of new campus has a lot of problems. A lot of capital will be invested and without a profit motive the Ivy League institutions are not willing to come to India. Moreover in India it is really difficult to get huge land propositions to set up a good campus in a metro city.
