Dismissing a PIL seeking yoga to be made part of curriculum in schools, the Supreme Court said “It couldn’t impose yoga on anyone or make it a mandatory part of the school curriculum”.
A bench comprising of Chief Justice T.S.Thakur, Justice D.Y.Chandrachud & Justice L.Nagaswera Rao told the petitioner to go and persuade people to practice yoga rather than making it a part of the school curriculum”.
The petitioner wanted the Human Resource Development Ministry, The National Council of Education Research & Training, The National Council for Teacher Education and C.B.S.E to “provide standard textbooks of ‘yoga & health education’ for the students of Class 1 to 8th.
The Chief Justice T.S.Thakur asked the counsel of the petitioner that what ‘asana’ he had performed last and did he practice yoga in polluted environment too. The counsel had no answers for the same. The court said that “it was not impressed by knowledge of his yoga”
The Chief Justice said that “Mr.Krishnamani, you are not doing your yoga these days; otherwise you would have remembered the list of the ‘asanas’ you did”.
The bench said “People will themselves pick yoga; we can’t impose yoga on anyone”.
