During the meeting held on Friday, the governing body of Dayal Singh College decided that once Dyal Singh (Evening) College is converted to the morning college the new name for the college would be 'Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya'. The reason for renaming the college is that the Dyal Singh (Morning) College already exists.
Amitabh Sinha, Chairman of the Governing Body, said that the name was "picked to pay obeisance to the mother". Singh further said that the GB's resolution has been sent to the DU Vice-Chancellor for the final approval. Earlier, GB was considering renaming the college after Madan Mohan Malviya as 'Madan Mohan Malviya College'.
The current name of the college is after the name of 'Dyal Singh Majithia'. Dyal Singh Majithia is founded of the Tribune paper in 1981 and Punjab National Bank in 1984.
Explaining why ‘Vande Mataram Mahavidyalayaʼ was chosen over ‘Madan Mohan Malviya Collegeʼ, Sinha told The Indian Express, “Woh (Malviya) kiske bachche the? Hum unhi ko pranaam kar rahe hain. Maa ka darza sabse upar hota hai aur unhe pranaam karna hai. (Whose child was Malviya? We are paying respect to her. The stature of the mother is above all else). Vande mataram means to pay obeisance to the mother. There is no politics in the name.”
“Whether it's your own mother or Bharat mata, mother is mother. Those who have a problem with paying obeisance to mother, there is a question mark on whether they are human beings or not,” he said.
The final decision on the name of the college was taken unanimously by the 16 members.
