NEW DELHI: A three-member committee has been set up by the HRD Ministry on Tuesday, to recommend ways to avoid vacancies at the time of admission in IITs and other technical institutes which are funded by central government.

IIT, BHU), 1518 vacancies in NITs and 1174 in central government funded technical institutions.

The severe brainstorming session in the ministry saw numerous options being explored. One of the suggestions was to do away with the refund of one lakh rupees to students. There was a consensus that the students were not taking the amount used for blocking an admission seat seriously as almost 95% of it is refunded. Another option under deliberation was that after a session commences, students should be allowed to register again and mark fresh options. It was felt that though students might miss part of the session they can still make up for it.

The apprehensions of students from rest of India to study in Northeast can be held responsible for the many vacant seats in most NITs of Northeast. An HRD source revealed that most of the vacancies are part of state quota.
