All universities and colleges have been notified by the University Grants Commission regarding the inclusion of a subject on Urban Planning in the curriculum from the commencement of current academic session.
The Vice Chancellors of distinguished and eminent universities part of the country have been written to, by the UGC chairman, Mr. Jaspal Sandhu. Mr. Sandhu in his letter has proposed a syllabus comprising of urban planning as course/subject to be started in their institutes as well as those affiliated with them.
He has requested conveying of relevant instructions to the institutes by their respected VCs in order to successfully implement the proposed plan and to take necessary steps for starting off this new subject of interest at graduate and post graduate level.
The University Grants Commission decree came after the proposal and beginning of implementation of the smart city project undertaken by the Central government.
A presentation regarding the participation of cities and towns as the keys to economic progress which also elicited the requirement for capacity building in urban administration and urban planning was made to the honourable Prime Minister by the members of the University Grants Commission.
