UGC has written a letter to all the educational institutions and has urged them to educate the students about the ill-effects of the end-of-life products (e-waste). In the letter, UGC said that “there is a need to initiate sustained mechanism to create awareness in order to reduce the adverse impact on environment and health due to the polluting technologies used in the unorganized sector for recycling e-waste.”

An awareness program regarding the same was initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in 2015. The 'Awareness Program on

Environmental hazards of Electronic Waste' was initiated with the help of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI).

The program provides training, tools, content material, films, and printed material to create awareness about the hazards of e-waste on the environment.

UGC asked all the institutes to make use of the available material to raise the awareness bout the same among the students regarding health risks, best practices for environmentally safe recycling and the related rules/regulations in the country.
