The National Tsunami Warning System (NTWS) is working satisfactorily for the entire mainland coastline of India along with Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. This is a 24X7 National Tsunami Warning System which has been developed and implemented by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences at Hyderabad. The NTWS is capable of detecting tsunamigenic earthquakes which helps in monitoring of tsunamis. As a part of NTWS system appropriate advisories are provided to all concerned authorities of coastal States/Union Territories using fail safe communication infrastructure.
An allocation of Rs. 10.0 crores has been made during 2010-11 for sustained operation of various observational, monitoring, warning and expert decision support sub-systems of the NTWS.
